Yamaha Clavinova CLP-200 Digital Pianos, Sound of a Grand Piano

The Yamaha Corporation of America Piano Division’s recent debut of the CLP-200 Series Clavinovas was met with acclaim from piano distributors and buyers across the nation as soon as they were presented on the sales floors this fall.

“In all my years in retail, I have never seen a better-selling, better-received digital piano by salespeople and customers alike than the new Yamaha CLP Series,” states Howard Sontag, General Manager of Keyboard Concepts in Van Nuys, Calif. “The CLP Series Clavinova is the fastest growing segment of all the products we sell. From USB connectivity, to the new cabinet design, to the sounds and even the bench... if anything, they are priced below market for the value received.”

The CLP-200 Series features innovative digital pianos that elegantly capture the sound of a grand piano in all of its natural grandeur and beauty while offering a range of interactive options for users. All feature Advanced Wave Memory tone generation technology, which creates powerful, realistic instrumental sounds. The piano voices, in particular, benefit from the new Dynamic Stereo Sampling (DSS) system, which includes recordings of a wide range of dynamics – from loud to soft – to fully capture the varying nuances in timbre and tone of a grand piano.

Retailers at Winter NAMM will also see the debut of the CLP-240PE, the first time Yamaha has made a mid-line Clavinova available in a high-end, polished ebony finish.

“Yamaha has upgraded the sound and touch quite a bit,” notes David Charvonia, Store Manager of Piano Place in Fairfax, Virg. “These new instruments have a warmer, richer sound, right down to the entry level model, which is one of the reasons that the Clavinova is a better choice for the beginning piano student than a low-cost or used piano.”

Select models of the CLP-200 Series include Key-Off and Stereo Sustain samples, as well as a new three-way speaker system, an enlarged memory, iAFC technology and USB connectivity. Most models incorporate the ground-breaking Graded Hammer Effect 3 (GH3) technology, while the CLP-280 includes a Natural Wood Keyboard made with real-wood white keys. Heavy in the lower end and light in the upper keys, the CLP’s GH3 technology provides the characteristic weight balance between key and hammer, and replicates the weight gradations of the keys found in an acoustic grand.

“Everyone is pleased with the enhanced sound quality and the new look,” says Denny Coiro, Manager of Washburn Pianos in Mesa, Ariz. “An exciting new addition is the USB ports found in the more advanced models. They offer a real advantage to users who wish to interface with modern media.”

The new Clavinovas also include a selection of digitally sampled musical instrument sounds. The CLP-280/270/240 are the first Clavinovas to feature both USB TO HOST and TO DEVICE terminals. This means users can connect to a computer (TO HOST) and select from the vast possibilities in computer music, hook up to their favorite USB storage device (TO DEVICE) for storing valuable song data – all at the same time.
