Lexicon 960L Multi-Channel Digital Effects: The Mummy Returns
Renowned mixer Dennis Sands chooses the Lexicon 960L to create consistent soundscapes in a 5.1 cinema film "No other device compares" to what the Lexicon 960L can achieve in multi-channel film sound while delivering excellent sonics and a familiar user interface. As The Mummy Returns to cinema screens this summer, it exhibits a sound design achieved in large part by the performance of the acclaimed Lexicon 960L Multi-Channel Digital Effects System. Noted Music Scoring Mixer and Re-Recording Mixer Dennis Sands used the 960L on this summer's horror-thriller hit, and found it to be the best tool yet for creating believable and consistent-sounding audio environments for a 5.1 soundtrack.
"On The Mummy Returns, I have been using the 5.1 reverb for the orchestral music parts," says Sands, a three-time Academy Award nominee for Best Sound, for the films Forest Gump, Contact and Castaway. Sands is a veteran of Hollywood sound and mixing stages, with other credits including American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption. "The Lexicon 960L has proven to be an invaluable tool in its ability to provide beautifully warm and rich halls and effects, which is extremely useful for orchestral and general music mixing.
"As much as I like to use the 960L for music tracks, I also enjoy using it in dubbing," he continues. "In dubbing, mixers tend to use reverbs to create aural environments, rather than the way they're used in music for ambience. The Lexicon 960L excels in this regard by allowing me to create a sound environment that's consistent across all five channels - instead of having to use multiple stereo reverbs, which brings subtle but significant inconsistencies in sound. The 960L is a tremendous tool for surround film mixing. It's a less synthetic, more natural approach to using reverb as part of a film's sound design."
Sands also appreciates the flexibility the 960L LARC2 offers for setup and configuration, as well as the unit's overall ease of use. "Many mixers in the film sound business are familiar with and love the Lexicon 480L reverb," he says. "The 960L is a continuation of that design excellence. I think it's fair to say that when it comes to signal processing and 5.1, no other device compares to Lexicon's 960L."
With 24-bit/96kHz processing capability and true multi-channel surround reverb processing, the Lexicon 960L brings a new level of aural enhancement to surround music mixing - one that was not possible before. Utilizing Lexicon's revolutionary 3DPM ™ 3-Dimensional Perceptual Modeling algorithms and the 960L's extensive array of factory programs, users can achieve sonic results that only Lexicon signal processors can deliver, and do so in a discrete 6-channel environment. Combined with such operational multi-channel features as 8 touch-sensitive motorized faders, an assignable joystick for surround panning, and creative parameter control, the 960L makes true multi-channel surround signal processing a reality.
