Sound and Audio: Dynamic range and the Human Ear

In the previous lesson we simply stated the human hearing or ear had a dynamic range from 0dB to about 130db. But it is a little bit more complex as you will find out in this lesson. Knowing how the ear and hearing deals with sound and audio is important if you are working with audio. If you know what you hear, why you hear it and what you don't hear it's much easier to learn and understand audio and record and edit sound.

This next image shows how the human ear picks up different sound frequencies. The red line is a limit of the human ear. Anything below this line we can not hear. Anything above the blues line will be considered painful. Anything in between these lines we can hear.

The yellow/orange field shows the range and frequencies of human speech, which immediately explains how we can hear and perceive spoken words.
