SLS speaker system for PA: audio engineerAaron RuseAaron Ruse, audio engineer and project manager for the industrial staging and lighting company TRAVIS Inc., is an avid fan of SLS speaker systems. Using them exclusively on all of his touring and corporate event productions, Ruse recently relied on the Compact Ribbon Line Array LS8685 for portions of The Bubel/Aiken Foundation Gala Benefit Dinner in Los Angeles."The SLS speaker systems offer a great intelligibility and an impressive smooth response through all the highs and the high mid-frequencies," says Ruse. "A unique feature with the LS8695 is the portability of the true line array system. It is the only line array system that we've found that is ground supportable and portable. It allows us to set up our systems in hotel and convention ballrooms in a very timely fashion, while still attaining the line array characteristics that we desired. Many of these spaces are very deep and setting up delay lines is not very desirable. We are able to eliminate those delay lines because of the line array characteristics displayed in the LS8695. This saves us time, saves the client money, and offers up better solutions aesthetically." TRAVIS Inc. has completed projects for clients including the local government in Washington D.C. and national charity events. The mainstay of their business is corporate events and meetings for pharmaceutical companies such as Takeda Pharmaceutical and Abbott Laboratories. With events and meetings taking place nationwide, TRAVIS Inc. has to overcome many challenges ranging from saving ideas, to equipment and recommendations. "Probably the most notable challenge would be trying to find room for our equipment in a limited space," says Ruse. "Often times a client is trying to economize their budget by renting out the smallest space possible, while fitting the maximum number of people in that space. There's no consideration given to what equipment's going to be placed in that room and how much space it's going to take up." One of the top priorities Ruse has in the planning stages is to let the client know how much space the equipment will require. Fortunately the column-like configuration of the SLS speaker systems they are currently using allow for much more stealth placement rather than having to rig them up in the ceiling. The SLS speakers also eliminate the ceiling height challenge since the units are suitable to be ground supported and blend into the scenic elements. With this feature they almost disappear and become part of the set. "We are able to eliminate some of the need for doubling up equipment and scenic elements on top of it," comments Ruse.
