Producer/Engineer Chick Ainlay Turns to Steinberg's NuendoNashville-based Producer/Engineer Chuck Ainlay is no stranger to digital recording. He is one of the leading surround mixers with a number of DVD-A and DVD-video releases to his credit. But he has been reluctant to employ digital audio workstations for mixing and editing, as they have not approached his standards for technical performance and sound quality. Enter Steinberg's Nuendo Media Production System. "There are three reasons why I decided to work with Nuendo: It is a 32 bit floating point system, which means processing and plug-ins won't degrade the sound. It's 96 kHz, which I require for surround mixing. And last, but not the least important aspect, it's less expensive than other digital audio systems.While Ainlay is no stranger to workstations in the studio, this is the first time he has opted to run the system hands on. He's been flying solo since the system was installed. "I don't know how I could have lived without it. I rely on it every day." Because Ainlay works with large-scale projects, he's been particularly pleased with the ability to load, then edit, 48 tracks simultaneously. "Nuendo is very easy to use. It's completely intuitive and the context sensitive help system is great," added Ainlay. In just four weeks with Nuendo, Ainlay has completed a number of projects, including Robert Earl Keen's anthem single; The Road Goes on Forever. Keen, who is known as an "analog kind of guy" specifically requested that Ainlay use Nuendo on the single to "max it out and take it to the next level". Both Keen and his label are pleased with the result. Ainlay's long association with Mark Knopfler continues as he works on the DVD-V of Knopfler's recent tour and the DVD-A of Sailing to Philadelphia. Nuendo with its 96 kHz processing and built-in surround features is key to both projects as Ainlay prepares the surround masters. Ainlay's confidence in the system has encouraged him to use to Nuendo to track new artist Nate Barrett, a singer/songwriter with Lyric records. The NUENDO Media Production System is a modular system centered on an audio software application that includes several hardware accessories. NUENDO features 24/96 kHz digital audio, advanced-featured surround mixing, a Video-Track, and MIDI-Tracks, along with the most comprehensive functions for digital audio available. How does it compare to Cubase by Carl I'm a producer putting together my home studio. I hear a lot about Nuendo being better than Cubase, but when I read the Nuendo articles they never talk about it being use as a recording studio, just for film, video etc. I guess my question is, Can Nuendo do everything Cubase does? and which would be the absolute best for my recording studio |
