Cool box. . . . Easy to use. . 16 seperate faders and pan,,, something Roland makes you spend $3500. for. . nice effects. Burner works great. touch screen blows doors off of the roland 1880, you dont need three hands to get around menus. . . If you want to spend more time tracking songs and less time reading the manual (roland gives you 3 to make you crazy) than this box rules. . . I use a digimax (8 channel mic pre) a 1/4 in TRS snake and my korg. Im totally mobile, (can carry the whole rig with 2 hands anywhere). . What more can I say, (oh yeah my friends are always crashing thier "pro tools" laptop setups) oh yeah and the Korg does'nt use any of that scary unexplainable roland compression scheme(thats what roland calls it ) (ill use compression when I want to . . Thank you) Anyway I was a former owner of the great roland vs1880 and the thing would not stop when I pressed stop so I sent the overpriced ,overbuttoned studio back and got the korg. . . . . . . . Korg rules. . . . . Im buying an MS200 synth tomorrow. . . . . . . . . . . Layte

This unit is a world away from a VS1680 as far as being user friendly goes. The only thing I find confusing is the insert effects.

I have had my D1600 for a couple of months now. I haven't really gotten to recording much on it yet. I have mostly been inputing and mixing down ADAT 8 track tapes. I was a little disappointed that the light pipe on the unit was only 2 track and not 8, but inputting through the analog inserts seems to result in no noticeable degredation in sound. After all the hassle and frustration I've gone through to try to get a computer system going so I could burn music recorded on my Adat to disk, the D1600 was a mindblowing experience. It did not take me long to transfer the first tune in from the Adat, record one additional track, mix it down and burn it to a disk. Wow! However, I do have one major gripe which I think may be useful information for other people. Some of the onboard effects add a lot of noise to the mix. And not just the one's that seem to be purposely designed to do that [? go figure]. The compression is particulary unsatifactory. Some of the problem could be my ineptitude in dealing with the effects, but I'm pretty sure it isn't just me. Seems you just might have to buy an external noise reduction unit of some kind to really put the finishing touches on the mix down.

Korg D1600 16-Track Digital Recorder: Korg D1600: It's Everything You Want....And More

If you're like me, you might have come across this web site (or this review) by searching high and low for reviews on digital 16 track recorders. Interestingly enough, there aren't too many reviews out there to be had, which is exactly why I'm throwing my two cents in. So I hope this helps those Out there who are undecided. If not, at least you know what I think, and I'll feel better knowing that I told you so. Up until recently, I had been a die-hard Roland user, owning and operating a Roland VS-880 since it was first released. But after some time, even with All the greatness that the VS-880 provided, I still found myself bouncing tracks and compromising sound quality due to track limitations. I finally outgrew My recorder, and I realized that it was time to upgrade. That's where all the indecisiveness kicked in. The digital home recording market has grown tremendously since I was first checking things out, and now every company imaginable is offering some kind of "do it yourself" Super-CD-All-In-One-Home-Production-Studio. So where to start? Obviously, my first choice was to stick with my homeboys, Roland, so I started looking At the Roland VS-1824CD. Now, it is one bee-utiful machine; a self contained recording, mixing and mastering powerhouse. BUT--and this happens to be a big BUT for me-- Roland did away with the PAN knobs which accompany each track. If you want to do any "on the fly" panning, you'd have to enter into the "pan settings" screen and adjust the Virtual knobs to your liking. But suppose I want to pan tracks 2,3, and 12 like crazy--all at the same time--all during mixdown. Impossible on the Roland VS-1824CD. That was a big let down for me, because I like the freedom of being able to interact spontaneously with my machine. Bottom line: Roland is headed much more in a computer Direction then a "hands-on" (knob tweaking) direction, and that's too bad. So I reluctantly gave up Roland, and decided to switch brands. Two units caught my eye right away: The Akai DSP16 and the Korg D1600. Both had the features I needed (designed For a more "hands-on" approach) and both were in roughly the same price range. STUMPED AGAIN!!!! Which unit is right for me??!!! Well. . . . Luckily for me, fate made a decision. The Akai DPS16 is no longer in production, and if you want one, it's now strictly E-Bay material. Now, not having tweaked one IN PERSON, I didn't want to drop the cash and get a machine Special delievered to me that I wouldn't like. So I went to the local music store and went with the Korg D1600. Now I have the thing at home, and I'm still unsure I made the right decision. Brand new, it came without the hard drive or CD burner installed, so I had to stick 'em in. Luckily, all you have to do is READ THE INSTRUCTIONS (don't try to wing it--you wanna do it right) and it's easy enough to install everything properly. So I made my connections, and started to get acquainted with this machine. Honestly, it took me about three days to learn all the in's and out's. . . And that's pretty damn good for an impatient fool like myself. Since you probably know all the stats of the machine (20 gig hard drive, Internal CD burner, and so forth) I won't get in to all that. I want to relay the "user friendly" factor of the machine here, because that's EXACTLY what it is--the most simplistic yet powerful machine out there for The price. Editing is as easy as selecting your "In, Out, and To" times and making the desired edit. Also, the "scrub" button is a very helpful factor when editing--you can see the wave and bring the time up or down to the Nearest millisecond for a perfect edit every time. You can assign the inputs to any track you want (ex. input 5 will work for tracks 1-16 when assigned), and the internal effects are mind boggling. When you're ready to mixdown, you go into "bounce mode", which takes your 16 tracks and puts them onto two tracks for CD burning. When you do this, the D1600 captures EVERY stereo image, every knob twist, Every spontaneous track boost or fade--everything--and puts it on two tracks. Then you master to CD, and listen to your newest jam. In my opinion, the KORG D1600 is the natural choice for those of us out there who don't want to succumb to the point and click world of PC recording. Yes, we want the sound, but we're analog kids at heart. We need To tweak knobs and move our own faders. We need to have an interaction with our machines--the Korg D1600 provides that opportunity, which is why I highly recommend it to anyone Looking to upgrade from a digital recording unit of any sort. The only drawback: No Aux Send knob. I like to apply effects to snares (think dub reggae), and when working with a drumloop, you can't isolate the snare. With an "aux send" knob, you can throw effects on a select portion Of the drum loop (reverb on the snare ONLY). I can't do that with this machine--but if you run through a mixer with an aux send knob, I suppose you can overcome this drawback. Not that big of a deal though. . . . . . Not in comparison To all the really really cool things you can do with the Korg D1600. I hope this kind of helps. . . . . . . .

I wan't a VS2480, but don't want to spend the money, I have a VS1680 Roland, but decided to try the Korg as an Upgrade until the 2480 came down in price. I don't need the 2480 anymore, the D1600 does everything I could ever want! Long story short, I'm selling my Roland and keeping the Korg.

The D1600 is a great mulit-track recorder, but the effects are a little confusing for a beginner to use. Most of the other functions are fairly intuitive, but the manual leaves a little to be desired
