the Recording chain

The studio is where it all happens. At least that is what most people think when talking about recording. Most of the recording obviously takes place in a recording studio. But there are also other parts to consider. In short the recording chain looks like this

Musicians -> Recording Equipment -> Playback equipment -> Listener.

It all starts with the musicians, how good are they, have they practiced the piece enough and what equipment do they use.

As soon as the musicians enter the studio the acoustics come into focus. Where is the guitar amp placed? On what kind of surface?
A microphone is placed somewhere in front of the amp. What kind of microphone, how far?

The microphone transfers the signal to a mixer or directly to a recording device and the signal goes digital. When the signal is digital it can be edited mixed and mastered and put on CD.

This is however not the end of the story. The CD is played by the consumer, in a car, at home, at a party or anywhere else. And everywhere it will sound different, but it should sound good everywhere.

As a sound engineer or producer you need to focus on every aspect. Even though you might not be able to influence them.
