My Morning Jacket It Still Moves recorded mixed on TL Audio VTC consoleBased out of Louisville, Kentucky, My Morning Jacket created quite a stir with their first two album releases - the debut 'Tennessee Fire' and the 2000 follow up 'At Dawn'. Now signed to RCA, the band nevertheless made the decision to record their third album "It Still Moves" in the same fashion as its predecessors - at the band's own "Above the Cadillac Studio" facility, located on the 1000 acre farm belonging to band member Johnny Quaid's grandparents. It's here that the band's recently acquired TL Audio VTC console is installed, courtesy of Boston based dealer Professional Audio Design.The band's engineer and mixer for the last 18 months has been New Orleans based Danny Kadar, whose previous credits include work with Iggy Pop, Chris Whitley and Miles Davis. Danny explained the band's choice of console: "In keeping with the bands love of vintage analog sounds and classic records we thought it would be a good idea to have a tube signal path. Since the studio is not near any major recording centres, there is not much in the way of maintenance technicians, so we wanted a reliable new console with an old vintage sound. The VTC was really the only thing that fit the bill." The desire to keep things analogue extended well beyond the choice of console and Studer A827 tape machine, since the analog chain was complete through mixdown, and the record did not become digital until mastering. "Even the reverbs we used were analog!" commented Danny. Having tracked the album through the VTC - including all the overdubs - the band moved on to Capitol Studios to mix it. And the final thoughts on the VTC? "I really enjoyed working on the console - it has a wonderful colour to it. The mic pres are warm without being fuzzy and the EQ section is very flexible."
