Microphones and Placement: Miking Grand Piano

Miking and recording a grand piano is easy. Although there are many advanced techniques using up to 8 microphones, a basic recording setup requires just a few good microphones to get the job done.

Most recording eningeers prefer to use good condenser microphones, but if nothing else is available 2 dynamic microphones will do. Take a look at the next image, it shows the positioning of the microphones over the piano. The microphones are poistioned using microphone stands.
