Russ Berger Design Group RBDG helps setting up new Recording Studio B

For more than thirteen years, Studio B Mastering has been in the business of making records in Charlotte, NC. Owner and chief engineer Dave Harris, who has worked with musicians such as Southern Culture on the Skids and the Reverend Horton Heat, wanted to move from his small mastering room into a larger space and turned to Russ Berger Design Group (RBDG) for help. In relocating the facility, Studio B nearly tripled the space of its operation while gaining an original RBDG design.-

"Working with Russ, Nichole [Bradley Culak] and the rest of the RBDG team has been a great experience from the start," says Harris. "After consulting with Russ about everything that I wanted for the new studio, I knew this was going to be a big project for me. After a few more years of saving, I approached RBDG and told them I was ready to begin. The outcome of their work is absolutely amazing. It was definitely worth the wait."

The 4,500 square foot structure formerly had been a contractor's office/warehouse. RBDG designed a 1,600 square foot mastering suite composed of a 540 square foot mastering room, a centrally located machine room, a lounge, and support spaces. Focusing on Harris' long-term goals, RBDG left enough remaining unfinished space to build out another mastering room under the same roof.

"One of the main challenges we faced was the noise coming from a major city equipment storage facility for trucks, vehicles and other equipment, located directly behind Studio B," says Russ Berger, president of RBDG. "Since sound isolation was critical, we created a shell environment - a unique room within a room. This solution is not always possible when retrofitting a design into an existing building."

The new construction was built out with sound isolation walls supporting a cap isolation ceiling, taking advantage of every inch of the available 14' clear height under the barrel-vaulted roof. Rather than just serving a sonic purpose, the acoustical treatments are also attractive elements of the space's interior architecture. Pyramid diffusers located at the front of the room have been placed inside a wood grid and illuminated with accent lighting. Cork flooring is used in the mastering room and sound-lock vestibule. The palette is clean and sophisticated, with the contrast between light and dark finishes giving the space a somewhat European feel.

Another challenge RBDG faced was to integrate the existing front offices into the new aesthetic of the mastering suite. "We worked closely with Dave, suggesting finishes that would bring the whole space together," says Nichole Bradley Culak, project manager and RBDG's lead interior designer. "The result is a very comfortable and warm place."

Studio B offers some of the industry's finest analog and digital equipment available, including SADie, Crookwood, Cranesong, Manley, and Tube-Tech

"From the moment you step into the facility, you can tell there's been a lot of care and detail invested in this place," continues Berger. "Dave loves music, and loves helping artists achieve the best possible results from their recordings. His warm and friendly manner coupled with his first-rate facility make Studio B a favorite of many regional and national producers."
