Meyer Sound MELODIE, Matrix3 at Crossroads Community Church
Megachurches have changed the way worship is conducted, the types of programs presented, and thus, the technology required. One such institution, Crossroads Community Church in Cincinnati, Oh., recently added a new 3,500-seat multi-use sanctuary in addition to 50 large, state-of-the-art classrooms and a 700-seat “black box” children’s theatre. To create an immersive audio experience for spoken word presentations and a wide variety of music performances, the Orlando, Fla., offices of Pro Sound, Inc. installed an advanced sound system featuring Meyer Sound M'elodie ultracompact high-power curvilinear array loudspeakers and Matrix3 audio show control system.
Determining the optimum system design for the expansive sanctuary required significant planning. The room features a central “thrust” stage that extends 20 feet out into the audience, but no proscenium, and contains a 180-degree, horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement. To add to the challenge, the sanctuary’s diverse programs demanded an especially versatile audio system.
“Crossroads hosts everything from spoken word and acoustical performances to full, amplified bands with electric guitars and modern worship music. They also host community events and concerts,” says Kelly Prince, sound designer and vice president at Pro Sound, Inc. “They needed quality sound, flexibility, and small cabinets so as not to interfere with the sightlines of the projection screens. The original PA wasn’t fully meeting their needs, so for their Christmas show, we brought in a M'elodie rig, and they loved it.”
In addition to the small footprint, the exceptional power-to-size ratio of M’elodie also made it an obvious choice for the facility. “When we first brought in the M’elodie speakers, the pastor looked at them and said, ‘those little things?’” says Prince. “But when he heard them, he was blown away.”
Four arrays of eight M'elodie cabinets each are distributed evenly around the thrust, along with two 700-HP ultrahigh-power subwoofers groundstacked per side. A Galileo loudspeaker management system, mounted backstage, handles processing.
The fully integrated Matrix3 audio show control system, employed in numerous Cirque du Soleil productions, is a powerful tool for sound designers. It provides a complete signal path — everything between the output of a microphone and the input of a loudspeaker — as well as comprehensive automation of nearly every feature and a flexible control structure.
“Matrix3’s SpaceMap multichannel panning feature allows [Crossroads audio director] Brian Stritenberger to route effects and instrumentation for certain productions, giving him the sound he wants just where he needs it,” says Prince.
The response to the new system has been overwhelmingly positive. “They’ve been thrilled with the quality and flexibility of the new rig,” says Prince. “It’s done everything they’ve needed and more. The church’s next goal is to phase out their old monitoring equipment in favor of some new Meyer Sound wedges, which we’re real excited about.”
