Steve Vai Joe Satriani John Petrucci mutual passion ToneWorks Pandora PX4 Effects Processo
Conceived by Joe Satriani and his manager as a celebration of guitar, G3 has successfully drawn fans of virtuosic guitar chops since 1996. The G3 tours have also given Satriani and longtime friend, Steve Vai, a chance to perform together and showcase the talent that has propelled them to the top of the guitar-playing pinnacle. To round out the group, Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci has come aboard as the most recent entrant into the guitar-centric extravaganza.
Vai, Satriani and Petrucci work and play so well together, it's not surprising they all have an affinity for the same piece of gear - the ToneWorks Pandora PX4 Personal Multi Effects Processor. They've all been using previous Pandora models for years as well. "I use the PX4 all the time now," says Satriani. "It's great back stage, on the tour bus, and even in the studio when I need to quickly check out ideas, practice, write or just play around."
Vai commented, "I use the Pandora on tour on a daily basis. It serves as my warm up rig among other things. On my last tour when I recorded the Live CD, I used the Pandora for demos. Also, many times while I record in the studio I put my guitar through it."
Petrucci concurred, "Basically wherever I am, whether it's the airport or backstage warming up or in my hotel room, I just plug a pair of headphones and a cable into the PX4. I use it to practice the difficult riffs I might be playing that night. I also use the rhythm feature that has the different drum patterns and bass patterns to jam and warm up and sometimes to entertain the other guys," he added. "It's my traveling practicing companion."
The members of G3 have also found the compact ToneWorks PXR4 Digital Recorder to be indispensable. Vai has created a new song entirely with the PXR4, entitled "Feathers." "All guitars were done through the PXR4 and I used my TRITON on the keys," he explained.
All three musicians are currently in the midst of other new projects. "Dream Theater will be heavily on tour in support of our new album, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. We'll be doing the U.S. tour with Joe Satriani and Kings X," Petrucci mentioned.
Satriani is gearing up to embark on a European tour, followed by dates in the U.S., in support of his new album, Strange Beautiful Music.
Vai recently released the first three CDs of his 10-CD boxed set entitled, The Secret Jewel Box, featuring rare and essential Vai recordings that do not appear on his solo records. In addition, he'll be in Tokyo in July as a featured performer at the world premiere of composer Ichiro Nodaira's Fire Strings, a concerto for electric guitar and 100-piece orchestra.
