Audio Engineer Chas Gerber SLS Loudspeakers for ultimate sound quality
As the architect of notable sound system designs for corporate events at leading hotel and convention venues across the country, Chas Gerber, audio engineer and owner of Gerber Acoustic Systems, depends on SLS Loudspeakers for the ultimate in quality sound. SLS has been rapidly signing up respected engineering firms as a result of its expanded marketing activities.
"SLS units offer versatility and phenomenal sound quality that you can't get anywhere else," says Gerber. "They've really helped me out tremendously. More than just another good product, SLS speakers allow for a fundamental shifting in how I can get past the hardware and into the music."
At an event held at the Mirage Hotel & Casino Event Center, Gerber positioned the RLA/2s about 25 feet upstage and 40 feet offstage putting the presenter, who was wearing a lavalier microphone, well within the sound field. The show was feedback free, mainly due to the exceptionally flat frequency response of the LS8880 (RLA/2) line array speakers.
"And that is not a typical situation," continues Gerber. "I'm being increasingly forced into those situations more and more. Once you show that you can position the speakers upstage of the presenter, very close and still manage without feedback, I'm expected to do it all the time and that's why I only use SLS units."
Most of the events that Gerber creates sound system designs for are held in ballrooms, which are rectangular spaces with hard walls that make the acoustics very challenging. Frequently this challenge involves a slap echo from the rear wall, which generally results in a lack of intelligibility for the audience as well as the performer. The farther a person is from the back wall, the longer the echo becomes, thus making the sound more confusing.
Along with the purchase of several SLS line array systems, Gerber Acoustics has implemented SLS' new Line Array Simulator Software, which automatically depicts and optimizes system coverage for even the most difficult venues. The LASS software gives a better prediction as to where the sound will fall. By strategically aiming the speakers, sound can be focused towards the audience, rather than reflective surfaces, facilitating better coverage without as many reflective tendencies.
"What makes SLS Loudspeakers great is that our ribbon driver is the perfect device to create a true line array speaker system," says Jeff Lowry, director of marketing for SLS Loudspeakers. "Our Line Array systems require very little external equalization or processing, due to the accurate coupling of the high frequency section. They make predicting where the sound goes a much simpler job than with conventional speaker systems. This is why professional sound designers and providers like Gerber Acoustics are selecting our products over our competitors."
Due to their design, SLS' planar ribbon speakers operate without many of the constraints found in conventional high frequency driver designs. Being of much lower mass and having a greater surface area, they appear as a purely resistive load to the output amplifiers. This feature enables amplifier systems to achieve close to its theoretical maximum performance thereby facilitating a noticeable increase in overall system fidelity and performance.
"There are some great hidden benefits about the speakers," says Gerber. "SLS has integrated the woofer and tweeter and provides a sonic signature that matches the lows to highs. There's nothing like them on the market."
With venues typically charging a rigging fee per point and requiring the use of their rigging hardware, the lightweight SLS units allow Gerber to fly 12 boxes on a single point in less than ten minutes. By moving the shackle that picks up the bumper bar, he is able to position the down angle perfectly. This becomes an economic advantage.
