Audio-Technica AT895 AT835ST Microphones at world cup
One of the largest sporting events on earth, the FIFA World Cup always succeeds in providing spectacular entertainment to its dedicated international audience. With so many detailed aspects to broadcasting soccer games of this grand scale, each one must be in top form to faithfully present this incredible tournament. Keeping with the principle of outfitting the best with the best, Audio-Technica microphones were specified for the 2002 World Cup by Robert Edwards, Sound Director of Video Sound Services Limited (UK).
The Audio-Technica AT895 adaptive-array microphone system was present for coverage of each manager's bench at every one of the World Cup's 64 games. Broadcasters were able to connect to specific circuits to independently access these microphones, which made up the core of the "Team A" and "Team B" feeds, available to broadcast companies around the world through host broadcaster HBS. The AT895's were also mixed in as part of the overall World TV feed, and used at halftime for sideline interviews.
The incredible off-axis rejection capabilities displayed by the AT895 perfectly suited the application, as Robert Edwards explained: "This microphone has a unique place in this high-profile world event. The extra audio discrimination available between the crowd noise and the benches was just what the client wanted. Extensive testing in the UK and Japan prior to the event gave the production team full confidence in using this microphone, with its ground-breaking technology."
The Audio-Technica AT835ST stereo shotgun microphone was specified as a remote stereo mic associated with the establishing video shot at each of the 20 venues. Having worked with AT835ST's before, Edwards found this an easy choice to make. He commented, "Reliability was an important factor in our specification, where the camera and mic are rigged in difficult, high and remote positions. The AT835ST's were rigged and left unattended for the duration of the various venues' operation. The excellent audio quality from A-T was rather taken for granted - a real plug and play device."
