I am an Electronic Engineer (previously designed equipment for Fender, Marshall, Peavey, Roland in the 60's-70's) and I am looking for technical assistance in programming a Roland GR-1 Guitar synth module to work with a Casio MG-510 Synth guitar. The guitar sends MIDI-out through a 5 pin cable and the GR-1 accepts MIDI-in for its sound instrument generators.

I am having trouble switching the different sounds in the GR-1 in the MIDI-in mode. Since I am mainly a guitar player, I admit that my MIDI programming knowledge is much less than those musicians who use MIDI on a regular basis. I would appreciate anybody with Roland GR-1 guitar synth (or Casio guitar Synth) programming experience to assist and enlighten me.

I have technical expertise in theory and repair of electronic musical instruments (specializing in vintage equipment) that I would be willing to share in return. I think we should all help out our fellow musicians whenever we can.

I have a GR50. There is no way to control it from the front panel. The 510 has a switch the one closest to the plugs for patch changes. You can place it on patch change and pluck a note and it will translate to a patch number. I am still trying to find a list of relationships. An ART X15 or some other MIDI footswitch controller will save you a lot of frustration. Put the controller in line between guitar and sound module. This will let you control the crazy Roland thing. They do not build stuff that is oriented to the user. They have many processes which require you to put your hands on the GS. Great if your not playing. I find their manuals get into very detailed engineering data and spend little time on how to. They are stuck in Octal thinking mode. Being a programmer I recognized it. Being a player I could care less. I like Korg because they think in base 10. The other alternative is to hook a computer with sequencing software that will let you control the sound module and midi thru the guitar. The MG510 converts analog to digital on board so it only needs to use a MIDI cable. The Roland systems use a 13 pin because the conversion is happening in the box.

13 pins seem to be 2 for each string's coil (mike) and earth.
Casio guitar goes directly via 5 pin DIN cable to other MIDI controller IN.
I. E. , Musical Keyboard MIDI IN, 5 pin DIN Jack. It's present on all modern electronic keyboards.

There are adaptor cables that provide interface from this din to DB15 so it can be plugged on a Computer's audio board. This has been widely publicized on Internet.

Proper software is needed to operate the computer via MIDI port. Cakewalk 8. 0 was bundled with SB cards long time ago.
