Absolute Pitch: Ear Training, absolute Hearing

Absolute Pitch is the ability to be able to hear the pitch of a note without knowing the note or hearing a previous note. Only a few people develop this ability or have this ability. Sometimes it is said that only 1 in a million people can do this.
Now you might be disappointed now you know this. But having a relative pitch hearing will help you a lot. As we will show by using the next MIDI music example.

Can you tell what note the first note is?

Probably not. And this is what absolute pitch is about. Just hearing any note and think: “hey this must be E3”.

Now that you know the first note, can you tell what note the second note is. Probably not yet. But now you can use your relative hearing! Because know your brain can hear the different between the first and second note. (this is an interval) . So if you train your ears you will find that you can hear this difference and think: ”hmmm this must be a Perfect 5th interval, so this is B3! ”. And you would be right!

Guessing all the other notes would work the same. You would hear the third note and think, it is a little higher. Just a half note, so it’s C4. The next is a whole note/step higher so that must be a D4.

As you can see you can train your ears to hear what is going on without having absolute pitch. And with a good ear you would be able to find the first note by playing it on an instrument.
