To really understand the principal of sheet music we need to do a little math. Sheet music is linked to time without any indication of seconds. To be able to keep track of time so you play every note at the right time the sheet music has to show you where to play the notes and how long. This means each note has to have the right start time and end time.
The only way sheet music can give you the exact location of each note. The length of each note needs to be right but also the times in between the notes, the rest periods. Sheet music uses bars to make this easier. Each bar has the same rhythm and tempo, so you can keep track of time a little more easily. If you have a simple 4/4 rhythm and a tempo of 60. You can keep counting 1 2 3 4 at the right speed and at least you will have the start of each bar right.
