Marty Davich writing music for ER, Thrid Watch television series
As an Emmy-winning television composer for two of NBC’s hit series, “ER” and “Third Watch,” Marty Davich has enjoyed a successful career writing music for television. Davich has composed scores for TV dramas since the early 1990’s and has worked on every episode of “ER” and “Third Watch” since the programs began.
Davich began his career as an on-air piano player for long-running soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” He was soon given the opportunity to serve as the music supervisor for the daytime drama series, a position that he held for nearly ten years. Soon, however, Davich made the leap to primetime television, amassing an impressive array of composing credits for high-profile programs such as “Beverly Hills 90210,” “Trinity” and “Presidio Med.” He received an Emmy award for his theme to “Trinity,” as well as Emmy nominations for his score to the miniseries “Jackie, Joan And Ethel, The Women Of Camelot.”
With years of experience satisfying discerning producers and meeting tight deadlines, Davich has expanded his palette to include a wide array of compositional tools. Among the products Davich sometimes employs to create his original compositions are sample libraries from ILIO Entertainments.
Davich was first introduced to ILIO’s products by a friend/programmer he worked with years ago. “I remember calling ILIO and discussing the projects I was currently working on,” describes Davich. “They were very helpful, and recommended a few titles based on those programs and that was the beginning of a solid professional relationship that is still ongoing.” Perhaps the most important factor for Davich is the variety and flexibility of ILIO libraries, which allow him to employ samples while retaining his own unique voice. “For the most part, I use ILIO’s percussive libraries, because they give me access to so many different sounds simultaneously, especially with the Giga Studio,” he states. “The extensive menus that their libraries have also puts a lot of information at my fingertips. This helps me to not be confined to the same loops over and over. I’m able to mix and match, and add in many different sounds so that my compositions are always fresh.”
In addition, Davich also finds that at times he is able to use tracks in the ILIO libraries just as they are. He feels that the ILIO content helps to drive the scenes, because it is edgier then other libraries. “What I like to do is combine sounds from several different mediums when creating a score, that way it’s just not one little loop taken from one sound library,” Davich says. “I’ll take a really electronic sound, then add a sound from an African library and also a shaker and right there I’ve put together a new and unique piece of work. Basically, these products are just components of my overall work.”
For a prolific and in-demand composer like Davich, there is no “typical day”. When he is particularly busy, he will often spend a solid 14-hour workday composing music. It is during hectic times like these that his arsenal of compositional tools becomes particularly valuable. “When I’m in the studio, it’s really high intensity and I’m completely focused,” says Davich. “The nature of my business is that I often have a lot of work in a very short period of time. Logistically it’s very important for me to have all of my resources, including sample libraries and virtual instruments, readily available at my fingertips.”
While Davich never knows what new challenges tomorrow will bring, he’s glad to have ILIO products as a trusted tool in his sonic arsenal. “It’s been a great relationship with ILIO,” he concludes. “I look forward to using more of their libraries in the future.”
