Vienna Symphonic Library First Edition Orchestral Cube Performance Set 90gigabytes samples

The Vienna Symphonic Library has announced that its First Edition shipped by mid-December. The product was featured at the recent Winter NAMM Show 2003 in Vienna’s “Symphonic Cube.” The initial release, consisting of the Orchestral Cube and the Performance Set, totals 90 gigabytes of samples. Customers who purchase the First Edition are also eligible for the company’s unique VIP program, which allows users to upgrade to forthcoming Vienna Symphonic Library products at a reduced cost. The completed library, which will be released over the coming years, will comprise up to 1.5 million tones and tone sequences, played by world-class musicians (including musicians from Vienna’s renowned orchestras) and captured with state-of-the-art recording technology.

The Vienna Symphonic Library is an Orchestral Sample Library of unprecedented sonic dimension. For the first time ever, the complete range of the modern symphony orchestra has been recorded in a specially constructed recording stage designed expressly for the rigorous demands of orchestral sampling. Produced by highly-educated composers, played by top musicians from Vienna’s world-renowned orchestras, recorded in 96 kHz/24 bit and perfected by a team of over 30 highly specialized editing engineers, the Vienna Symphonic Library will be an orchestral sample collection that is simply unsurpassed in both size and quality.

The First Edition, currently available for GigaStudio 2.5 and Emagic EXS24 mk II, consists of The Orchestral Cube and the Performance Set. Together, these two products contain approximately 90 gigabytes of samples. The Orchestral Cube is a massive treasury of string, percussion, brass and woodwind samples. The collection comprises over 42,000 samples, totaling 44 gigabytes of information. The Orchestral Cube contains single note samples with a variety of dynamics options, as well as a variety of multi-note samples including trills and tremolos. The Performance Set, the other component of the First Edition, allows users to play real legato in real-time with multiple dynamics. The collection contains 36,000 samples covering over 45 gigabytes. The Performance Set’s legato performances contain up to 3 dynamic layers with optional vibrato, and the string samples are available with and without slides. The Performance Set also features repetition performances, available in legato, portato and staccato with tempos ranging from 60 to 200 BPM and appoggiaturas.

Once complete, the Vienna Symphonic Library will consist of 1.5 million single-note samples and performance elements. Until now, many of these instruments have never been recorded for a sample library. For example, the bass trumpet, contrabass trombone, and contrabass tuba bring closure to the sampled brass category, while the world’s lowest-pitched gong, the deepest tubular bells, and others from the large and rare percussion collection owned by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra were captured as well.

“These libraries are unprecedented in terms of their sheer size, flexibility and quality,” says Mark Hiskey, president of ILIO, the American distributor. “We’re confident that these products will quickly become the industry standard in orchestral sampling, and we’re extremely excited to be able to bring the Vienna Symphonic Library products to our customers.”

However, the biggest innovations of the Vienna Symphonic Library are to be found in areas other than the enormous number and variety of samples. Specifically, quality, flexibility, ease of use, user support and upgrade-potential set this library far apart from its predecessors.

The samples are totally devoid of background noise (80 – 100 dB signal-to-noise) and have absolute clarity, even in the pianissimo performances. The “Silent Stage,” as it is called, was designed specifically to record samples of orchestral instruments. The recording technology used (stereo throughout with full mono compatibility) makes it possible to produce everything from epic Hollywood film music to chamber music arrangements or solo pieces. An entirely new component system consisting of so-called Performance Elements means that playing techniques such as legatos, runs and repetitions, which have had limited implementation in previous orchestral sample libraries, are now completely and intelligently integrated to make possible a realism unobtainable until now.

Special mappings make it easy for the user to adjust the timing and note lengths within the performance elements and even to manipulate these authentic passages in real-time. Because each instrument is mapped the same way across its entire range, the user can find any instrument or sound quickly and dependably, despite the vast number of individual instrument and ensemble samples. On the Vienna Symphonic Library’s extensive website (www.vsl.co.at) one finds not only the world’s largest available interactive instrument encyclopedia, but also technical hints, tips for arranging and guidelines on how to achieve the perfect mix. Further, there are a large number of excellent demos of individual instruments, small ensembles and full orchestras that can be heard or downloaded on the spot.

Lastly, customers who purchase the First Edition will automatically become eligible for Vienna Symphonic Library’s VIP program, which enables customers to upgrade at a reduced price to the forthcoming Pro Edition scheduled for release in 2003. The Pro Edition, a dramatic expansion of the First Edition, will offer extended playing techniques and more variants to every instrument already included in the First Edition, and increase the already-impressive sound quality from 16-bit to 24-bit. In addition, VIP customers can upgrade to all future collections on hard disk at affordable prices, and “crossgrade” to future software platforms and technologies as they emerge.
