BSS SOUNDWEB Processors for Pride of America
Pride of America set out on her maiden voyages earlier this year bringing not only a new level of comfort and safety to cruise travel but also a new apex in audio excellence. The latest addition to the Norwegian Cruise Line’s fleet is the first brand-new U.S.-flagged cruise ship in nearly 50 years. On board, vacationers enjoy the spirited entertainment options, Americana décor and regional fare. Cruise passengers will also experience the benefit of great sound consistently delivered throughout the huge vessel thanks to the use of over 40 BSS Soundweb processors. The Soundwebs were selected by MAVCO for an integrated systems design provided as part of a design build implementation. The systems are being operated by the Pride of America’s 100-percent U.S. crew, which has been the case ever since it first set sail for Hawaii in July 2005.
Pride of America was a major undertaking for MAVCO, which also designed and installed other entertainment and broadcast TV technologies aboard the ship. The ship-wide paging and background music system extensively uses JBL speakers and Crown amplifiers, and 40-plus BSS Soundwebs to control and coordinate audio in the ship’s 23 different venues, sending 12 channels of audio to a total of 34 zones onboard. MAVCO's Engineering Manager Rob Shuard was responsible for the systems design and implementation of the audio systems.
“Our designs were built upon the vessel’s zones assigned for public address and general alarms,” notes Mike Lacy, Vice President of Operations for MAVCO. “The ship’s broadcast center has a central server from which twelve channels of stereo music are sent to various parts of the ship, all controlled by the Soundweb. For instance, the PA system distributes music and paging throughout the ship, and the Soundweb also manages the ship’s alarm and alert system through the same paths or channels. The flexibility of the Soundweb fit our application perfectly. It manages both the sound and the processing of audio to wherever it’s needed on the ship, and it performs efficiently and delivers high quality sound. We’ve used Soundweb before on several other large integration projects and we’ll use it again in the future. It meets our requirements and is extremely reliable.”
