Joe Chiccarelli chooses Audio-Technica mics for his production of tim easton's new record
- A-T microphones critical in capturing the essential elements of an artist who many regard as one of the next important talents of the alt.country movement - Producer, mixer and engineer, Joe Chiccarelli, has made his mark with leading-edge artists in a variety of genres, from Tori Amos to Beck to U2 to Bon Jovi and Frank Zappa. In his latest endeavor as a producer, Joe captures the essence of Tim Easton, considered by many insiders to be an emerging major force in the lyrically powerful, gritty-sounding alt.country movement. Chiccarelli chose Audio-Technica 40 Series microphones to make this landmark recording.
"We took a minimalist approach with the sounds of all the instruments on the record," Chiccarelli explained of his production esthetic on Easton's album, 'The Truth About Us,' scheduled for release on New West Records on Jan. 24. "The backing band was essentially all the guys from Wilco, one of alt.country's most well-known bands. They have helped define the sound and feel of the entire genre. Their talents, combined with Tim's singing and songwriting, make a powerful statement. I wanted to be able to document it as accurately as possible, and that's where A-T microphones became an important part of the production."
Basic tracks were cut last summer at King Size Studios in Chicago, Wilco's home town. Faced with the challenge of getting the open, airy sound of the drums and guitars without sacrificing the sonic definition and punch of the recording, Chiccarelli and engineer Mike Hagler chose Audio-Technica 40 Series microphones. Perhaps the most critical aspects of this were the use of AT4047/SV's for the drum kit overheads, and an AT4051a on the high-hat. "The 4047's gave the overall drum sound a tremendous amount of body and bottom. They were the best microphones I could use to achieve the perfect balance between the distinctive edge of the drum kit and the warm, ambient sound of the room," he explained. "The 4047's pickup pattern was consistent and uniform throughout the range of the kit. It gave us a drum sound that was punchy and contemporary, yet at the same time open and organic-sounding."
Much of Tim Easton's acoustic guitar was recorded using the legendary Audio-Technica AT4050/CM5, and Chiccarelli believes it accurately captured the instrument and the spirit of Tim's performance. "The acoustic guitar through the AT4050 was unbeatable," he said, "particularly for the sweeter-sounding, more open tracks of the record." Chiccarelli placed the AT4050 close in on the guitar, about midway between the sound hole and the neck joint at the 12th fret. "That gave us the 'meat' of the guitar sound and the individual strings, but without the boominess you can get from most acoustics. It's a very natural place to position the microphone, and the AT4050 captured the sound with complete transparency."
The album's electric guitars give it much of its edge, and the A-T mics were prime performers there, as well. Chiccarelli and Hagler chose the AT4033a/SM for the vintage Fender, Ampeg and Guild guitar amplifiers. Their preferred placement was to position the mic about six inches to a foot away from the speaker, on axis. "That gives you more of the air around the speaker, not just that close-in edge sound that so many amps are recorded with," said Chiccarelli. "Using the 4033 in that application really opens up the sound."
Chiccarelli believes the use of Audio-Technica microphones helped give Tim Easton's next record a distinct sonic advantage. "The extent to which we chose A-T microphones indicates just how much they've become a standard in the studio arsenal. Audio-Technica is now part of that elite group we use on a daily basis. They are an integral part of what the sound is."
