Nuendo goes DVD
Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG), Sony classical and Sony Music Entertainment, EMI classics, Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft, Universal Records, WEA records, but also acts like Rammstein or Scorpions: The reference list of the Hamburg (Germany) based company Syrinx music & media is sheer endless. DVD-Video, DVD-Rom or DVD-Audio are produced at Syrinx, making them pioneers in the fast growing DVD market. Syrinx started working on DVD's in 1998 and presented the world´s first DVD-Audio together with Panasonic and Technics on the international Funkausstellung in Berlin in Summer 1999. The presentation of the Super DVD with the Hamamura project has been a highlight of the year 2000: this Super DVD contains DVD-Video as well as DVD-Audio and can be played back through a DVD-Video or DVD-Audio player, showing totally new options to the industry.
As surround sound is one of the technologies that can be applied to DVD productions this is where Nuendo steps in. The flexible and scalable use of Nuendo helped in creating some of the newer productions made at Syrinx. A recent concert by the multi-platinum German rockband The Scorpions and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra marked one of the highlights at the Expo 2000 in Hanover. 128 tracks were needed to record this gigantic concert, not only including the band and the orchestra, but also two choirs This concert is published on Tdk-Mediactive.
Steinberg interviewed Marcus Herzog, producer and engineer, and one of the founders of Syrinx music & media, to know more about this recording and how Nuendo fitted the needs:
The concert was recorded on two Otari Radar HD-Recording Systems and a large number of Tascam DA 78's and DA 88's. All orchestra and choir tracks were imported into Nuendo. Those 70 tracks were sub-mixed to 24 channels, which were routed to a Yamaha 02R mixer. Three Sonic Solutions Systems with the vocals and guitars and some Tascam machines were running synchronized to Nuendo, the outputs going to two more Yamaha 02R mixers. Outboard gear used on the mix included a Lexicon 960 surround effect processor, and a Lexicon 480. In Marcus Herzog's appraisal Nuendo's main benefits are the compatibility to all existing surround formats, the vast amount of automation options, unlimited track sizing and zooming capacities, real-time editing and the compatibility to a huge amount of file-formats: A feature Marcus appreciates very much is the integration of the Open TL format, that makes swapping between Nuendo and a Tascam MX 2424 system a so called no-brainer: Just take the drives out of the 2424, put them into the computer running Nuendo, and immediately start editing and mixing without loosing time for file transfers or copying. This system is ideal for classical recordings, for example. Instead of bringing a whole computer system to the concert hall, just record on the Tascam MX 2424 and mix the recording in the studio on Nuendo.
The New Years' Eve concert of the Hamburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Ingo Metzmacher was recorded this way, using two Tascam MX 2424's. The recording is already available on CD and on a promotion-purposed DVD-Audio, but is not yet for sale.
