Music composer Nicholas Pike adopts Roland 7000-series V-mixing system
LOS ANGELES, Nicholas Pike, the music composer for films such as Return to Me (David Duchovny,Minnie Driver) and Critters ,music videos including “Wild Wild West ”(Will Smith),and television work ranging from HBO ’s Tales from the Crypt to the popular “Godzilla ”Taco Bell commercials, has recently outfitted his L.A.-based studio with a Roland 7000-Series 94-Channel V-Mixing System.
“The first time I saw the V-Mixing System was at the NAMM show in Los Angeles about a year ago,”Pike recalls.“At the time,I wasn ’t thinking about getting a new console.I was using an analog console and I was sort of just interested in finding out about [the V-Mixing System ] because of the convenience it provided.”
This “convenience ”boils down to the V-Mixing System ’s ability to save complete mixer “scenes ”—including all routings, level,EQ and onboard effects —and recall them with the touch of a button.
“When I ’m working on a movie,I might have anywhere from 20 to 50 different cues,or pieces of music I have to write,”explains Pike.“One thing that tends to happen,as I move from one cue to another,is that I ’ll have different volume levels or different amounts of reverb Åc So one thing I ’ve found very useful is saving ‘snapshots ’with all the internal settings, and labeling them with that particular cue ’s name.If I have to re-do something,I just recall all my settings and adjust from there.”
With so many digital mixers on the market today,Pike explains his reasoning for choosing the V-Mixing System:“First off,I realized that I needed a console with a small footprint that I could keep right next to my keyboard and my monitors in the ‘sweet spot ’of my 5.1 [Surround ] system. So the [V-Mixing System ]started looking good for its compact size, but also because it sounded great and had an enormous number of inputs for my synths and samplers.”
Another advantage was the V-Mixing System ’s dynamics processing on every channel and high-quality onboard effects —expandable to 16 channels.“The reverbs sound good and obviously there ’s lots of the ‘classic ’Roland guitar sort of stuff which are useful to put on all different kinds of things,”notes Pike.
“Making the transition from analog to digital wasn ’t as steep a curve as I thought it would be,”he confirms.“I found the console to be pretty intuitive in terms of working in that domain. What really amazed me was how deep this mixer can become,if you want it to.”
The coming months will hold many exciting new projects for Pike. “I ’m doing another film with Bonnie Hunter, the director of Return to Me , plus an IMAX film that ’s coming along that will probably be a big orchestral thing.Again, the Roland mixer is going to prove invaluable for both these projects.”
